The Bureau of Indian Affairs
The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) is the principle bureau within the Federal government responsible for the administration of programs for Federally recognized Indian tribes and for promoting Indian self-determination. In addition, the Bureau has a trust responsibility emanating from treaties and other agreements with Indian groups.

Tribal Contact List
Federal consultation is required under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and the National Historic Preservation Act with Indian tribes and Native Alaska villages and corporations. The Bureau of Indian Affairs publishes a listing of all Federally recognized Indian tribes. The Bureau of Indian Affairs also provides periodic information regarding Alaska Native regional corporations, and these data have been compiled in the Native American Consultation Database.

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and the Native Historic Preservation Act also require Federal consultation with Native Hawaiian organizations. Both statutes require consultation with Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O’ Hawai’i Nei and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. Other Native Hawaiian organizations, identified by the State of Hawaii have have also been included the Native American Consultation Database.

Indian Reservations in the Continental United States
This map shows the location of Federal Indian Reservations in the continental United States. The map was compiled by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in ARC/INFO format at a scale of 1:2,000,000. The BIA map data was subsequently adjusted by the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies to a scale of 1:5845860 using a Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area Projection.

Map numbers indicate the locations of Indian reservations within the continental United States. Both Federal and State Reservations are displayed. The key to reservation names is available on the accompanying reservation index.

Although better resolution can be gained by using a PDF version of the map, users are urged to search the Native American Consultation Database for information relating to geographic data. County designations were not included on the original BIA map, and despite checking, mapping and database errors may result from inclusion of counties which touch Indian reservation boundaries. Reservation names have been adjusted to conform to current usage in the Native American Consultation Database, but not on the reservation map index.
