The Indians of the Sioux Sprachfamilie - part of 1
The Indians, who are called “Sioux”, call themselves Lakota, Dakota or Nakota, which “allied " “friends” and/or meant.
The designation “Sioux” comes from the French and is the wrongly expressed word nadewisou the Ojibwa (Indian), which means “queues”.
The Dakota, also “Santee Sioux” mentioned, settled the area east Mississippi, which belongs now to Minnesota. Minnesota is a Lakota Dakota Nakota word, which means “much water” (mni ota). There are four master federations:
the Mdewakontonwon in Minnesota, Flandreau (Süddakota) and on the Santee reservation in Nebraska
the Wahpeton, which now on the Devil's Lake reservation (Norddakota), Flandreau and Sisseton (Süddakota)
the Wahpekute on the Santee reservation in Nebraska and away Peck (Montana)
the Sisseton, which live on the Devil's Lake reservation in Norddakota and in Süddakota.
The Nakota, also admits as “Yanktonai” or “Yankton Sioux” lives in the southeast of Süddakota. They are divided into three master federations:
the Yankton, which live now on the Yankton reservation in Süddakota
the Upper Yanktonai (upper Yanktonai), which lives on the standings skirt reservation in Süddakota and on the Devil's Lake reservation in Norddakota
the Lower Yanktonai (lower Yanktonai), which lives on the Crow Creek reservation and on the away Peck reservation in Montana.
The Lakota, admits as “Teton Sioux” is west of the Missouri river. The Lakota is in terms of figures largest one of these three groups. There are seven master federations:
the Oglala on the Pine Ridge reservation in Süddakota
