The Wounded Knee massacre

… on 29 December 1890

The Abgesannten of different trunks crossed the mountains, in order to see and speak the Messiah “Wovoka”. Under the Sioux Short were bulletin, Fire Thunder, Kicking Bear and Low Dog and under the Cheyenne were Porcupine, some different and a woman. The Indians of different trunks met at the wind River reservation in Wyoming, which they left 1889 against Christmas.

In August 1890 the US Government believed that it would concern with the spirit dance in truth a war dance and she feared an Indian rebellion.

In November 1890 the war Ministry troops, which occupied the Lakota camps with Pine Ridge and Rosebud, in order to accuse the spirit dancers of, sent it a war against the US Government would prepare. In truth were the Indians endeavors their right to practice of their holy ceremonies to resume. As reaction to the military FE storage they plannten different strategies, in order to avoid a confrontation with the soldiers. The military had the instruction to isolate the spirit dance leaders from its trailers to.

The reservation agents feared that the influence of Sitting bulletin could lead with the master members to acts of violence. In December 1890 was alert stand-by that the spirit dancers could break out and the military should arrest such leaders like the chieftains Sitting bulletin and Big Foot.

On 15 December 1890 Sitting bulletin with eight its Krieger of the reservation police on the standings skirt reservation was murdered. One stated, which would have resisted Sitting bulletin the capture. Some its friends fled into the Big Foot camps of the Miniconjou Sioux. The old Big Foot was a peaceful leader. It nevertheless was on the list as “troublemaker” and its capture was arranged. Its group should be brought after away Bennett.

In the darkness of the night 23 December 1890 the gang of 350 people the Miniconjou village at the Cheyenne river, in order on the 150 miles long march, relied which took one week to make bath country after Pine the Ridge. Although the chieftain Big Foot was gotten sick with pneumonia aged and seriously, its group crossed the rough frozen area that of bath country with the goal the protection of chieftain talks Cloud (red cloud) to attain, which food, assistance and horses had promised. It is reported that both, Big Foot and talk Cloud, peace wanted. On 28 December 1890 was the group of major Samuel M. Whitside and the 7. Kavalerie surrounds. Big Foot´s gang hisste the white flag, but the army pressed the Indians and forced it to the bank of the Wounded Knee of brook. There four large Hotchkiss Kononen were in combat-ready shank, in order on the Indians to be fired on both sides of the valley.

In this evening Colonel James Forsyth arrived with reinforcement and the command over the operation. To sleep the Indians permitted, when they were cross-examined of the soldiers through the night. Questions were placed to the Indians, in order to determine, who from them in the Little Bighorn battle fourteen years in former times had participated.

The soldiers instructed to deliver the Indians all weapons, which increased nervousness and seriousness of the situation. While the soldiers scanned the Indians for weapons, some Indians spirit dance songs began to sing and threw to one of them with a ceremony act with earth. This action was misunderstood by the soldiers and as feindseelige aggression interpreted and in the moment separated a rifle shot, when the soldiers wanted to take it from an Indian away. Although this inadvertent single shot did not hurt anybody, the soldiers retaliated immediately with a ball hail from the cannons and smaller weapons.

The Indians tried to defend with blosen hands. But the happening transformed into a bloody chaos and the 350 unarmed Indians was completely underlaid that approximately 500 soldiers.

Most Indians were killed during the first ten to twenty minutes. The army pursued still some Indians, who tried into the proximity of a ravine to flee. Some reported to the survivor later, the soldiers would have “revenge for Little Bighorn!” called, when they pursued fleeing Indians.

Many the hurt one died outside in the frost. In the afternoon 29 December 1890 was terminated the Dahinschlachten. Approximately three hundred humans, under it the chieftain Big Foot, men, women and children - old persons and boy - were dead because of the frozen bank of the Wounded Knee of brook. Twenty-three soldiers of the 7. Kavalerie received later the honour medal for slaughtering defenseless Indians with Wounded Knee.

A snowstorm swept December 1890 at the night 29 over the country. As it cleared up were frozen dead bodies of Indian because of many places of the river bank. The dead ones were thrown into a mass grave. It is reported that one had found still four living infants, which of their dying nut/mother into a scarf cloth had been wound.

There a nut/mother with its child in the arm had been down-shot, when she affected the straight white flag… Another nut/mother was down-shot. The infant, not knowing that its nut/mother is dead, it tried to drink the chest… Women, who fled with your babies, were together down-shot. … After all that it was proclaimed that those, which were not killed or wounded, should come and them nothing would happen. Small boys came from their hiding places and as them into the proximity of the soldiers came, them were surrounded and niedergemetzelt.

Black Elk:
If I look from this hill and think back of my life, I can see the dahingemetzelten women and children lying before my mental eye here. And some more died here in the snowstorm. A dream of mankind died here. It was a wonderful dream… the holy circle is broken. There is no more center and the holy tree is dead.
