Description of Duties

Under the direct supervision of the Head/Deputy Head, Team Leader or Head of a Technical Unit within the Human Rights Section, the incumbent will perform the following main functions:

- Assist in conducting substantive research and analysis of human rights issues/events and assess their impact on the human rights situation in assigned region;

- Assist in collecting and analysing human rights indicators in region of assignment, including gender-specific indicators;

- Ensure human rights issues are integrated into political, humanitarian and economic efforts and programmes;

- Ensure the integration of gender perspectives and attention to specific women/girl's rights issues within all assigned human rights activities;

- Follow up on different cases and situations, including in the field;

- Assist in conducting human rights capacity-building efforts in region of assignment;

- Assist in the development and implementation of human rights training programmes;

- Represent the UN human rights office at working level meetings, as relevant;

- Contribute and/or draft a variety of reports, communications, briefings, statements, etc., including to policy-making bodies;

- Perform other duties as required by the Head/Deputy Head of the Human Rights Section.

Qualifications

 

Education :

University Degree (Bachelors or equivalent) preferably in law, political science, international relations or other disciplines related to human rights.

Experience :

At least 3 years of progressively responsible work experience in assigned geographic locations at national and international levels in the human rights field, including in the cause and resolution of human rights conflicts in accordance with international standards.

Language :

Fluency in French and English (both written and spoken). Another UN official language is desirable.

Other Desirable Skills :

Good knowledge of the region or country of assignment, to include knowledge of the political environment and legal statutes as they pertain to human rights. Expertise on the fight against impunity, judiciary and NGO training, National institutions, gender and/or child protection issues is desirable.
