Sources for Native American Research

 

The selection of links presented here ranges from sites which deal with a variety of topics to others focused on a specific subject or geographical area. Using an Internet search engine like Yahoo! to search with terms such as "Native Americ an research," can also be fruitful. In addition, following the links to Native American Studies programs, which are included in some of the sites listed below, may lead you to course syllabi. These syllabi are likely to offer insights into research in the field.

Beginning Library Research on Native American Studies

This page from the Standford University Libraries, although it is intended as a guide to research in those libraries, may be helpful to other researchers, as well. It discusses Library of Congress terminology for Native American topics. It also contain s bibliographies of specialized handbooks, encyclopedias, and other types of works useful for looking into studies relating to American Indians.

Links to reports on contemporary critical Indian issues.

 

Native Americans and the Environment

This site is, in its own words, "dedicated to promoting education and research on environmental issues facing Native American and First Nations communities."

 

Bibliographies of Northern and Central California Indians

Links to introductory and background information, maps, and annotated bibliographies. Includes individual tribal bibliographies.

 

The South Dakota Oral History Center

Site gives description of the collections for the American Indian Research Project (AIRP) and the South Dakota Oral History Project (SDOHP), as well as information on how to access the collections.

 

Native American Webliography

Collection of links pertaining to research on Native Americans with an emphasis on archaeology.

 

Native Americans and Public Policy: A Guide to Resources at the Carl Albert Center Congressional Archives

Among the papers of 51 former members of Congress, held at The Carl Albert Center Congressional Archives at the University of Oklahoma, are many resources pertinent to the study of Native A merican policy, status, and conditions.
