Section 601(d), title I, of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, Public Law 90-351, places a responsibility on the Secretary of the Interior to determine those Indian tribes which perform law and order functions. The listing below identifies only those Indian tribes where tribal jurisdiction and responsibility for law and order is clearly established. Determination by the Secretary concerning Indian tribes not listed below will be made on an individual basis upon application by such tribes under provisions of the act to the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration of the Department of Justice.
The following Indian tribes have been determined by the Secretary of the Interior to be performing law and order functions.
